Did you know that tonight is a blue moon? Neither did we. Until, Josh, our resident astrology expert filled us in on all-things-blue-moon.

Defined as the second full moon in a single month, those looking up tonight will be treated to a view of what’s commonly known as a blue moon. But blue moons of this sort aren’t really blue and don’t actually have anything to do with color. (Certain natural occurrences, like volcanic eruptions or wildfires can cause the moon to appear red, orange, or blue, as pictured above.)

Though the expression, “once in a blue moon” is used to describe extremely rare events, blue moons aren’t all that unusual. The monthly calendar was built on the lunar cycle (29.5 days), so there is usually only one full moon per month. But once every 2 1/2 years or so, those extra half days add up to two full moons in a month. It is, however, relatively rare for a blue moon to fall on New Year’s Eve (this won’t happen again until 2028). And it is even rarer for it to fall on New Year’s Eve of a new decade.

This year has been designated International Year of Astronomy , as the world celebrated the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope to study the skies. Tonight’s blue moon is a perfect conclusion to the year’s astronomical festivities.

People tend to be more emotionally expressive during a full moon because of the change in the electromagnetic energy that affects them mentally and neurologically. Be prepared to see some drastic changes to your energy field and your choices.

WEEDS (season 4)

Kevin Nealon, former “Saturday Night Live” funny man, could be found at Sonora Grill last night. The comic is performing tonight at 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm at the Ogden Wiseguys Comedy Cafe, located at 269 Historic 25th Street. Tickets are $25 and available through SmithsTix (801-467-8499).

Nealon spent nine seasons with “Saturday Night Live” as a writer and a cast member. He is best remembered for his character, Franz, who was created after Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Nealon, who has set himself apart from other comics with his unique humor and relatively clean comedy, now has a role on the TV show “Weeds.” He also just finished his first comedy special, being sold on DVD titled “Now Hear Me Out.”

Have you ever had ice cream made from a 1949 John Deere engine?

Maybe we should back up. Have you ever even heard of ice cream made from a 1927 John Deere engine?

Stop by Trudy’s Poppin’ Johhny Ice Cream at 2501 Washington Boulevard and see it happen yourself.

Owner, Trudy Soland, has sold her old-fashioned ice cream at the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo and at the Weber County Fair. In July, she moved into a permanent location at the Ogden Welcome Center.

Don’t wait until the summer to go check things out. Trudy’s Poppin’ Johnny Ice Cream also sells hot beverages, doughnuts, soups, sandwiches, and salads. Soland distributes bus schedules and plans to sell UTA bus tickets, Ogden Amphitheatre tickets, Egyptian Theatre tickets, and even rent bicycles.

Downtown Ogden is lucky to have Trudy as one of its newest business owners. She is one nice lady, as seen in this news clip from 2News This Morning.

He spent years in a dog costume, performing as Barkley on “Sesame Street.” He walked the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route as a juggling Fraggle. And now, Fred Garbo entertains audiences around the world using blow-up suits with his Inflatable Theater.

Seen on the Late Show with David Letterman, at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and on Broadway at the New Victory Theater, Fred Garbo and Daielma Santos perform with their unique inflatable inventions that are: helium light and hilarious.

Catch them tonight at 7:30 pm at Peery’s Egyptian Theater, located at 2415 Washington Blvd. Tickets are $15 and $12 for students and seniors. Student rush tickets will also be available for $10 one hour prior to the performance at Peery’s Egyptian Theater Box Office.
